They offer an opportunity to continually reinvent the space and keep the magic alive season after season. However, they are not the only ones who can partake in this whimsical activity; people of all ages can find solace and inspiration in creating a fairy garden.

Back in New York, the Dorsets are still in marital discord and Aunt Julia has died. Lily receives only a fraction of her vast fortune, the bulk having been left to her cousin Grace. Now homeless and adrift, Lily is invited by Carry Fisher to stay with her and the Gormers for the summer.

Trenor tricks her into leaving the opera and accompanying him to his home, where he tries to kiss her, claiming that Lily is not playing a fair game when she accepts his money but refuses him her attentions. When Lily arrives home, her aunt refuses to lend her the money to repay the $9,000 she received from Trenor. Lily confides in Grace, asking if she should turn to Selden for his understanding, but Grace advises against it; Grace secretly loves Lawrence and is jealous of Lily. Lily had arranged a later appointment with Selden while at the wedding, and she counts on his love for her to overcome her foolish mistakes. Lily Bart is a beautiful but impoverished socialite accustomed to comfort and luxury. Along with her younger cousin, Grace Stepney, she lives with her wealthy aunt, Julia Peniston, who gives Lily a small allowance.

Lily genuinely admires lawyer Lawrence Selden, but he is too poor for her to seriously consider marrying. Her choices are limited to coarse, vulgar Simon Rosedale, a rising financier, and wealthy but dull Percy Gryce. Lily, however, cannot help preferring Selden, and during a country weekend, they take a long walk and share an innocent kiss. Fearful for her future, a dejected Lily pours out her troubles to Judy's husband, Gus Trenor. Later, Lily purchases scandalous letters written by Bertha Dorset revealing that Selden was her lover.

Home and Garden

In December 2007, Oscar-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino bought the building that houses the New Beverly Cinema. Tarantino famously said, "As long as I'm alive, and as long as I'm rich, the New Beverly will be there, showing double features in 35mm." Beginning in September 2014, Tarantino took over the programming duties. Their size can range from expansive setups that sprawl across garden beds to more modest arrangements that brighten up small corners of outdoor areas.

For a woman to go unaccompanied to a man's room is not proof she is a tramp, but might as well be. Rosedale guesses something of Lily's financial situation, and makes her an offer she refuses. So, too, in a different way, does Gus Trenor (Dan Aykroyd), playing one of those rich men who offer investment advice to desirable women as if they have only benevolence on their minds. A woman risks losing her chance of happiness with the only man she has ever loved.A woman risks losing her chance of happiness with the only man she has ever loved.A woman risks losing her chance of happiness with the only man she has ever loved.

Terence Davies's starched, funereally gloomy screen adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel ''The House of Mirth'' arrives at a timely moment in New York City's social history. Located at the Hammer Museum in Westwood, the Billy Wilder Theater is the home of the UCLA Film & Television Archive public programs. The Wilder is one of the few venues in the country that is able to exhibit an entire century's worth of moving images in their original formats. From the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection all the way up to cutting-edge digital cinema, the Wilder can accommodate an array of screen technologies.

The House of Mirth review – Gillian Anderson is Oscar-worthy in a brilliant adaptation

Woolpert, the Streamline Moderne-style theatre was renovated and reopened by the American Cinematheque in 2005. The Aero was updated again in 2019 and 2021 with new projection equipment, enhanced sound and facility upgrades. American Cinematheque programming includes sneak previews, retrospectives, revivals, restorations, in-person discussions with filmmakers, and the annual All-Night Horrorthon. The renovation includes state of the art 35mm and 70mm film projection with powerful new audio; a cool retro ambience and endless eye candy. Unlike Tarantino's other theatre, the New Beverly, the Vista will focus on first-run releases. Opened by Patty Polinger and Cathy Tauber in 1985, Vidiots became an L.A.

In Lily's scenes with Lawrence Selden (Eric Stoltz), the lawyer who would be her ideal husband were it not for his relative impecuniousness, Ms. Anderson comports herself with horsy flirtatiousness that is uncomfortable to watch. Not until the end, when Selden realizes what he has lost, does this actor betray any flickerings of his character's inner life. But Daniel Day Lewis's quietly smoldering Newland Archer in ''The Age of Innocence'' showed it could be done. The story of Lily Bart (Gillian Anderson), the beautiful society princess who miscalculates in her search for an advantageous match, becomes a Rake's Progress of social shame. Terence Davies has characterised The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton as Jane Austen with the gloves off.

Even less impressive are the male catches these women pursue so craftily. These dynamos of business and finance tend to be at best dull and priggish, at worst lecherous boors. There, Lily is to be seen lounging on deck with the brilliant blue water rippling behind her, evidently shot on a sound stage with a back-projection. Davies' "The House of Mirth" will be compared with Martin Scorsese's "The Age of Innocence," also based on a Wharton novel.

He offers to marry Lily once she and Bertha are reconciled, but Lily refuses. At a wedding, Lily receives a $5,000 check from Gus Trenor, who claims to have reinvested another $4,000. Later, he invites Lily to the opera, where she is seen by her disapproving aunt and Lawrence Selden as she sits with Trenor and Rosedale.

It would be wrong, I think, to cast the role as a fragile flower; Lily is a strong, healthy and competent woman who has everything she needs to lead a long and happy life, except (1) a husband, or (2) a society that provides for independent women. Building a fairy garden is an exercise in imagination and resourcefulness. Choose a stump or a small little area in the garden and plant small flowers. Add pebbles or rocks for landscaping, and consider adding a small wooden fairy door to welcome the fairies.

But she projects none of the innate refinement necessary for Lily, who should mirror her name by embodying a rarefied mixture of delicacy, beauty and vivacious wit. In one crowd scene the director dresses her in bright red in contrast with everyone else's grays, blacks and muted greens. It's a cheap effect because Lily is not a scarlet woman (or even a rebel) in her own mind, and even those who tarnish her reputation know it. The film's austerity underscores Wharton's anger and disgust at the hypocrisy, cruelty and greed of the upper crust of her time.

But if the styles of Dickens and Wharton don't align in terms of character portrayal, they do in their storytelling. Almost in spite of itself, ''The House of Mirth'' is powerful, at times even moving. The story of Lily's expulsion from the inner circle and her descent through failed jobs into abject poverty is a relentlessly tragic tale of bad luck, cruelty and missed opportunity. Although set nearly 100 years ago, it still sends a chill of recognition and dread. It's a worst possible scenario of bad things happening to a good person.

Carry believes Lily's two possibilities for marriage are George Dorset and Simon Rosedale. George asks Lily for the truth about his wife Bertha's infidelities, but she denies any knowledge of them. He has found out about Bertha's letters and advises Lily to use them to force Bertha to restore her social standing.
